Privacy: Self-regulation in practice

Google Tech Talk September 17, 2009 ABSTRACT Aleece M. McDonald will talk about industry self-regulation for online privacy. After a brief overview of how we do here, we explore the status quo of two studies. First, what the user is a burden if people read the online privacy policy? How long does it take to do this, and what is the economic value of this period? Secondly, how well users understand the privacy policies? We evaluated the six guidelines on data protection in three different display modesFormat has been standardized formats and do not help users as much as their supporters might like. Finally, it concludes with an overview of public policy options for online privacy. Bring your ideas, we might have a lively discussion. Aleece M. McDonald is a graduate student in Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University, where he is a member of Cylab Usable Privacy and Security (CUPS), a research laboratory. Their interests cover the intersection of Internet technology, politics,Economics and Law. Mrs. McDonald's research includes the effectiveness of industry self-regulation, behavioral economics and mental models of privacy, the analysis of network traffic, to combat spyware, automotive, privacy and RFID. Over a decade of experience working for start-up software, Ms. McDonald has a masters degree in Public Policy and Management and a degree in professional writing, both from Carnegie Mellon.
